Owner and Head Trainer of CrossFit Archaic

We are a military family and absolutely love traveling around visiting other cities ‘boxes,’ collecting t-shirts and great new ideas for workouts. I started my career with CrossFit about 4 years ago in Anchorage Alaska. (I worked in hotel management for 16 years prior.) Bryan, my husband, was the one that got us started. He loves to tell the story of how long it took me to ‘buy in’ to CrossFit. It was a while. I didn’t like coming in last all the time, or all of the ‘scaling’ I had to do to make it through a WOD, I didn’t like the music, or the fact that we had to drive 30 minutes to get to the box. Excuses, excuses…now, I love and believe in the CF methodology si much that I own my own box and am so thankful for all that have joined us. This is fun stuff and I absolutely love doing the programming for you guys.

My first introduction to CrossFit was from a reference on an Air Force internet discussion forum about fitness in early 2007. “Check out CrossFit.com, it is all you need to know about fitness and getting stronger.” After seeing a workout posted for that day of multiple handstand push-ups and pull-ups, I did not think this program was for me.

Fast forward to November 2008 and CrossFit Alaska….. I had heard that there was a new gym in town that utilized CrossFit and I finally decided to visit and look around. I found a group of high school athletes lying on the floor after a workout in pools of their own sweat. My initial reaction was how could a 38 year old guy come close to doing this stuff and almost walked out. Tony Reishus, co-owner of CF Alaska, assured me that the program was scalable to every fitness level, that everyone has to start somewhere and that the guys in the pools of sweat were some of high school off-season training clients and not to worry.

I talked Richelle into attending our first intro class the weekend of Thanksgiving and have not looked back since. Through CrossFit, I have discovered a love of lifting heavy weights, something that always intimidated me when I would try a program for a while and give up. The sense of community and support that is the very nature of CrossFit motivated me to learn all that I could about this “new” approach to fitness. In my normal job as an Air Force Optometrist, I always passed my annual physical fitness test, but always stressed about my performance since it was not a focus in my day to day life. Since discovering CrossFit, my annual PT test is just another WOD to complete and goes by stress free.

I enjoy competing in just about any event that comes along from 5Ks to half-marthons to Adventure racing to Olympic Weightlifting and Powerlifting meets to CrossFit competitions. I have competed in the CrossFit Games qualification events since 2009 and hope to make the cut in the CF Games Masters division someday.

Hi my name is Tina Dunagan and I started Crossfit in 2012. At first my goal was just to get into better shape. After just a few workouts I realized this was not a typical gym, people were cheering me on even though I was the last one to finish. I fell in love with the camaraderie, sense of community, and of course the workouts. Crossfit has become a lifestyle for myself and my family. I have grown to like Crossfit so much that I got my level one coaching certificate so I can help other people with their Crossfit journey.
